This August was a busy month for Pote Law Firm! But there was still time to take a few important, mission-oriented steps that I wanted to share so that others might also be inspired towards similar commitments.
1% for the Planet
First, at the beginning of the month, Pote Law Firm became a proud partner of 1% for the Planet. 1% for the Planet is a nonprofit organization established by Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia, and Craig Mathews, founder of Blue Ribbon Flies, in order to help fund diverse environmental organizations - each with their own mission(s) related to the protection of our planet and preservation of our environment.
As a 1% for the Planet partner, Pote Law Firm has pledged to donate at least 1% of our gross revenue to nonprofit and other organizations that are approved by 1% for the Planet. In this way, we aspire to be 1% better for the planet that we all share and, in doing so, we have taken an important first step towards fulfilling our own commitment to protecting the environment. But this was not the only such step taken this month.
EPA's WasteWise Program
This month, we also registered this month to be a partner of and endorser for EPA's WasteWise. WasteWise encourages businesses and other organizations to reduce waste and conserve resources, promoting more sustainable materials management. WasteWise also supports the Food Recovery Challenge, Electronics Challenge and Federal Green Challenge under its Sustainable Materials Management Program. Be sure to check out those programs if you're curious.
As a WasteWise partner, we are and will remain committed to improving our resource use and continually monitoring and reducing the waste our firm sends to landfill. We have also established annual waste-reduction targets that will be evaluated by EPA against our established baseline.
As a WasteWise endorser, we have committed to encourage other businesses and organizations to become WasteWise partners themselves. In this way, we hope to help facilitate the creation of a community of environmentally responsible businesses and other partners committed to tracking and reducing their own waste generation.
B Impact Assessment
Finally, we also finished our first B Impact Assessment as a step towards completing our B Corp certification. This assessment examines our business structure and company policies as well as the impact our firm has on our communities, environment, workers and much more. Completing the assessment was a tremendously valuable activity that has required the examination of nearly every aspect of our business and their effects on our various stakeholders. We're already a better business just for having evaluated ourselves in this way.
The next step is to submit our results for verification by B Lab, a nonprofit organized for the purpose of promoting business as a force for good. If things go well, Pote Law Firm will soon be a certified B Corp.
If PLF can get this done, you can too! And I'd be happy to talk to you about any of these programs and organizations to help you determine how you and your business can make these or related commitments. If you are ready to get started, Reach out, Today!
