When you think about law firms, you probably don't associate them with environmental protection or preservation. But on the heels of America Recycles Day, I wanted to share some of the efforts that we're making at Pote Law Firm to promote recycling and to help clean up our environment - locally and globally.
Cherry Creek Cleanup 2.0
Last Friday was America Recycles Day and, in recognition of the occasion, I joined the tremendous volunteers of Auraria Sustainable Campus Program as a part of their Cherry Creek Cleanup 2.0. We spent the morning cleaning up part of the Cherry Creek Trail in downtown Denver and gathered nearly 200 lbs of trash in the process - collecting everything from e-scooters that had been tossed into the creek, to discarded clothing, to more cigarette butts than you can imagine. (If you're gonna smoke, please hang onto your butts!)
Unfortunately, nearly all of the trash collected will end up in the landfill. Most of it is too heavily soiled, deteriorated, or damaged to be reused or recycled. Obviously, it would be much better for our environment if these items were properly disposed of in the first place. Word to the wise: don't ever toss your e-scooter into the creek!
Cleanup 2.0 has come and gone, but there will be another one next month and you can always host your own! You can find out how to join the volunteers of Auraria Sustainable Campus Program and future cleanups here: Connect with the ASCP. They'll even supply the gloves and grabbers!
EPA's WasteWise Participant & Endorser
This month Pote Law Firm also submitted its baseline waste assessment and its goals for the next year as a new partner of and endorser for EPA's WasteWise Program. As discussed previously, WasteWise encourages businesses and other organizations to reduce waste and conserve resources. WasteWise also supports the Food Recovery Challenge, Electronics Challenge and Federal Green Challenge under its Sustainable Materials Management Program. Be sure to check out those programs as well if you're curious.
As a small firm that provides legal services, we don't generate a large amount of waste and we're already good about recycling what we can. But we know we can always be better. Our baseline assessment has helped us formulate targets for the next year, with the requirement that we reduce our waste sent to landfill by at least 5%. The goals we have set for ourselves have us reaching that target by upping our recycling efforts and implementing a composting program for food waste and other organics. We also intend to just generate less food waste in the next year, as waste prevention is the best waste reduction strategy of them all.
Furthermore, we are committed to encouraging other businesses and organizations to become WasteWise partners themselves and to informing them about the program and how it can help them in their own waste-reduction efforts. Through this program and others, we hope to help create of a community of environmentally responsible businesses and other organizations committed to recycling or reducing waste and improving their impact on the environment.
1% for the Planet Member
In order to protect the environment beyond our local community, we are also a proud partner of 1% for the Planet. 1% for the Planet is a nonprofit organization established by Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia, and Craig Mathews, founder of Blue Ribbon Flies, and it was started in order to fund a variety of separate environmental organizations with their own missions and efforts.
Accordingly, we donate at least 1% of our gross revenue to nonprofit and other environmental organizations that are approved by 1% for the Planet. In this way, we aspire to be 1% better for the planet that we all share. There is no planet B.
If you'd like to support 1% for the Planet, now is the perfect time! Their annual Network Auction starts tomorrow (Nov. 20th) and lasts until Dec. 9th at 10:00pm EST. You can bid on various unique products and services from their business and nonprofit partners in order to raise money for the organization here: 4th Annual 1% for the Planet Network Auction Maybe you'll even find the perfect present for the holidays!
If we can do it, so can you! And I'd be happy to talk to you about any of these programs and organizations to see whether they would be a good fit for you or your business. If you are ready to get started, Reach out, Today!
